INSTRUCTIONS

 

There are many favoured ways of securing socks to cables. Here are the manufacturers recommendations.

 

First slide the sock onto the cable as far as it can go, then work as much slack as possible back out of the sock.

 

Then take a piece of Venetian blind cord about 2-3 times the length of the sock. Wrap it around the sock at the other end from the pulling eye.

 

Tie a “granny knot”, so that the ends of the cord are equal in length. Wrap both ends around the sock and tie another “granny”, pulling both ends as tight as you can.

 

Repeat this process until you have used all the length of the cord and secure the ends. Do not use any other securing aids along the length of the sock.

 

Cable socks come in lots of shapes and sizes. We commonly supply open ended socks. Meaning the sock has an opening close to the eye that the cable can pass through.

 

This is used when the end of the cable being pulled, needs to go past the winch. Typically the cable would be pulled as far as possible up to the winch, then the sock would be pushed back along the cable to get another grip further back and pulled again.

 

This procedure can be repeated as many times as you like. When the length required has been pulled, then the sock can be slid back along the cable to remove it.

 

Often gripping the cable back from the end like this can tear the cable sheath. This can be prevented by cutting the top and bottom off a large soft drink bottle, then cutting the remaining cylinder down the side.

 

This split cylinder can be fitted around the cable at the point where it leaves the opening in the sock, thereby protecting the cable.
